from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst
with a BFA in 2002, I was still unsure of what
I wanted my work to say. During the summer of
2002, I was given the opportunity to work in Italy
with 19 other artists who were also on their own
search. This workshop offered me the opportunity
to talk to these artists about the concerns, ideas
and themes in their artwork. Through this dialogue,
I was able to target what I wanted my art to say
about my community, my world and me.
Through conceptual art and feminist
themes, I am looking at the cultural constructs of women
versus their natural essence, their intuitive nature.
Through oil and mixed media, I am starting to uncover
the parts of me that are an “image” versus
those parts of me and my work that come about naturally.
Exploring work from artists like Kiki Smith and writers
like Helene Cixous has inspired me to delve further into
the female image and definition.
