We are formed from a solid, unalloyed friendship that, for most of us, began in grade school. Together in a vapid emotionless chasm we saw a naked, open beauty in music and we clung to it.
High school saw us with our first instruments and Angel of the Odd’s first incarnation. In college we focused enough to produce an album’s worth of original material -- our first real effort. We sold out of the 500 copies we had pressed and finished the year with a number-one song in the alternative section of MP3.com and three songs in the top ten.
It wasn’t until after college that Angel of the Odd comfortably solidified, meeting a drummer who completed our creative soul. That summer we labored in kitchens and laundry rooms to pay the bills, devoting every hour of free time to writing and recording new material in an abandoned church in the countryside. The fruit of that arduous summer -- another full-length album -- was mastered at the Lodge in NYC by Emily Lazar (David Bowie, Mindless Self Indulgence, Apples in Stereo) and released in the Fall of 2002. Since that time, the Odd has moved to the New York area in order to support their new release and establish a following through playing live shows.
On a creative level, Angel of the Odd is dedicated to certain ideals in rock and roll that we think are worthy of respect and that command our own. Music that is personal, honest, and emotive has always resonated with us. We have been influenced in this way by bands like Remy Zero, Cursive, Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins, Superdrag, and the Flaming Lips. Their uniqueness, respect for ambiguity, uncompromising creative voice, and dedication has inspired us. We strive to emulate these qualities in our music, as well as to offer a constant challenge to the audience, the industry, and to ourselves.
